Abiding in God’s Truth – The Disciple-Maker’s Devotional

“If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:31b-32)

Eternal truth was not conceived by sinful men. It resides far beyond us in God’s domain and chosen self-disclosure. Therefore, let’s consider another related reality – all counterfeit forms of religion are largely the product of each founder’s world view which was highly influenced by their era and culture. Each founder’s values, personality, and spiritual struggles with sin became part of the DNA of the world religion or cult which they founded. Understanding this, you have only to reflect on the holy sinless life of the Lord Jesus Christ to comprehend the supreme uniqueness of Biblical Christianity. It stands totally alone, because of grace and the sinless character, virgin birth, and many miracles preformed by Founder. He is without equal in world history!

The Savior’s death, resurrection, and matchless power displayed over nature, plus His ability to transform the lives of His disciples from within became undeniable. He impacted the lives of His loyal followers and they became selfless, morally pure, and spiritually dynamic. He never made anyone sick, weaker, or more sinful. His redemptive purpose was clear. His holiness became so obvious that it could only be denied by those who were still looking for – something which they did not truly understand. The world’s unfulfilled searching only reveals that those seeking have yet to understand that eternal truth cannot be found in a religion created by a fellow sinner. Nor is it discovered in secular philosophy. The meaning of unchanging truth uniquely resides and was timelessly revealed by God in the eternal expression of His triune – Oneness!

Endless searching that fails to rule out the self-deception of atheistic theory results in spiritual and the myriad of beautiful creations which our earth displays – somehow created themselves out of nothing requires too much faith! Such fantasy amounts to an escape from reason. Atheism is mankind’s veiled attempt to avoid life’s moral and ethical consequences for sinful thinking and behavior. It is important to unmask the world’s empty graceless forms of religion. God, who revealed Himself and paid the price for grace, did not need man’s approval nor did He require our intellectual comprehension – He only asks that we trust Him enough to receive what He lovingly did for us on the cross. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

If you hide from God behind your limited, finite thinking, which prides itself in finding no ultimate answers, and feel that Truth is far to illusive, subjective, and unknowable to ever be found, then you must also be prepared to endure a life of endless unanswered and often painful questions. In which case, you will sadly forfeit ever understanding that eternal Truth is found in a fully knowable person with nail prints in His hands (see John 14:6). Always remember that truth reveres God’s self-disclosure and affirms His redemptive mission. This is why the Bible says,

“…you will know the truth and the truth will make you free…” (John 8:32).
