Mankind’s question from the beginning of time has always been – “What is God like?” Our Bible provides that answer. He has given us many centuries to slowly understand His nature so we can rejoice in that revelation. It was Solomon who reminded us that our inquiry and God’s plans have a sense of purpose and timing in the larger scheme of things. The Bible says, “The LORD works out everything to its proper end…” (Proverbs 16:4a)
Describing the dawn of history, God’s Word declares, “…the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Genesis 1:2) His revelation to Moses was mankind’s earliest glimpse of who God was and what He was like. Centuries later, when He was ready, He chose to reveal Himself to us more fully saying,
“Before Me no god was formed, nor will there be one after Me. I, even I, am the Lord and apart from Me there is no Savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed … , You are My witnesses‟ declares the Lord, ‘that I am God.’” (Isaiah 43:10b-12)
His progressive revelation was both profound and clear. Through it we discovered that He alone can be our Savior, and we are called to be His witnesses. You may be thinking, if that was revealed so early in Isaiah’s day, then “why” did God later choose to become a man? Again, the Bible’s answer is wonderfully clear, “For in Christ all the fullness of Deity lives in bodily form…” and “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might be-come the righteousness of God.” It was only through the incarnation that God could accomplish the amazing exchange that made redemption possible (Col 2:9a; 2 Cor. 5:21). The cross revealed His love and became the center piece of history! It was there that our salvation was secured and made available to all mankind.
Love beyond our imagination is what called for God’s physical presence with us on earth (John 3:16). Love is the only reason why the Savior came. He literally became our sin! His total self sacrifice took place on the cross while He hung suspended between heaven and earth. His enormous price of grace finally ended when He cried out, “…it is finished!” In that moment, He released His Spirit to God the Father while dying in our place. (John 19:30)
Nothing in all the combined religions of the world will ever approach the Lord’s pure sinless life, sacrificial death, and bodily resurrection! The incarnation of our God stands unique and solitary in human history! Only once did He “…became flesh and made His dwelling among us…” taking on and embodying the names Emmanuel, Jesus, Messiah, and the Son of Man (John 1:14). When you witness, you are literally sharing the holiest message ever delivered from heaven to man, so quietly meditate on this reality –
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; with-out Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not under-stood it.” (John 1:1-5)
