Dreams – The Disciple-Making Lifestyle

“…Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
(Genesis 40:8b)

Part One

Joseph actually knew our living God, and that explains why he was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. The challenge facing him was effectively applying his personal faith even in difficult situations. That’s precisely where we all live!

When God guides us to make a difficult decision – the purpose of His leading will never be restrained by our circumstances. The result will solely depend upon our willingness to wisely answer His call in personal obedience (see Luke 19:30-34). His timing, plans, and commands always function in perfect harmony. Our part of obedience is simply learning to dare – to trust Him. Walking by faith means going where He leads us while depending on Him to fulfill His plan both for and through us!

The Bible reassuringly reminds us that,
“… nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37)

Part Two

It was not the fact that young Joseph had vivid dreams that ultimately mattered (see Genesis 37:5-11). What mattered was the reality that God already had an amazing plan for his life! This again is exactly where we live (see Ephesians 2:10). Dreams were simply God’s means of leading Joseph to his unexpected place of service. Little did he imagine that God was purposefully shaping his destiny – to bless his whole family and the entire nation of Egypt!

Think quietly about God’s promise –

“…I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8)

When He speaks to our hearts through our daily Bible reading, a powerful sermon, a dream, or wise counsel – our job is to listen and obey!

Part Three

The Lord’s leadership for believers is always experienced in the crucible of learning to walk by faith. This process provides the spiritual maturity needed to grow throughout our lifetime. Our personal limitations are fully known to our Creator. Yet to our surprise, in ways we could never anticipate, He uses our most challenging ordeals to accomplish His sovereignty. Joseph expressed this truth about human adversity when he said – “…you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good…” (Genesis 50:20)

Joseph’s being sold into slavery, tempted by Potiphar’s wife, and thrown into prison all helped prepare him to become one of the world’s most influential men during his adult lifetime. It was his hardships that defined his character and groomed him to take his place in history!
